A Private Day in the Algarve: how we plan an itinerary around your family (or small group). The 7-question method.
The Algarve wins people over fast: Atlantic views, limestone cliffs, characterful towns, great food, and that “wide-open” feeling.
But with so much choice, many travellers hit the same point: you want the best bits — without spending your day managing logistics, parking, timing, and constant “where next?” decisions.
At Girafa Sábia, we plan your day differently: around your pace, your people, and what you want from the day — so you come away with a calm, beautiful memory, not a checklist.
You stay in control of the choices; we handle the planning and flow. No pressure, no compulsory stops.
The Algarve in numbers: why a people-first plan matters here.
The Algarve is one of Portugal’s leading tourism regions. In 2024, tourist accommodation in the region recorded 5.2 million guests and 20.7 million overnight stays.
Air traffic is another part of the picture: Faro Airport handled over 9.8 million passengers in 2024.
For national context: in 2024, Portugal recorded 31.6 million guests and 80.4 million overnight stays.
That’s why a format where timing, pacing, and pauses are built around people (not “maximum places”) makes a real difference here.
Why many travellers want “fewer decisions” on holiday.
Most families and small groups come to the Algarve for something simple: time together, beautiful scenery, and a lighter head — not a day of micro-decisions.
That’s exactly what a private day gives you:
we agree the pace, stops, walking, food, and overall flow in advance — and then you simply enjoy the day.

The 7 questions: how we plan a day around your family (or group)
1) What pace suits you: relaxed, balanced, or active?
Why we ask: pace isn’t “personality”. It’s about comfort, safety, and energy for your group — how many drives feel fine, how much walking feels enjoyable, and where pauses make sense.
We typically work with three formats:
Up to 4 hours — a gentle half-day
6–8 hours — a fuller day with a coffee stop (no long lunch in the middle)
8–12 hours — a full day, with a proper lunch or picnic (1.5–2 hours)
We’ll be upfront about what’s realistic in each option — you choose what fits.
2) Who’s travelling with you?
Children, older family members, friends, colleagues, two families together — it all matters.
Why: it helps us plan a day where everyone feels comfortable, not just the most active person in the group.
3) What are you most interested in?
Ocean and cliffs, towns and atmosphere, nature, history, local food, photography, easy walks.
Why: interests give the day its meaning — not a list of “must-dos”.
4) Any limitations or sensitivities we should account for?
For example:
motion sickness
walking limits
allergies / dietary needs
fixed timing (flight, check-in, appointment)
discomfort with heights or narrow paths
sensitivity to sun / temperature
Why: these details help us keep the day comfortable and safe, without pushing you into anything that doesn’t feel right.
5) What do you definitely not want?
For example:
long drives “just because”
sections with steep ups/downs
narrow roads if they feel stressful
trying to do “too much” in one day
Why: it lets us shape the plan around your preferences and avoid the things that can spoil the day.
6) How would you like to handle food?
Coffee stop, restaurant lunch, picnic, “light and simple” or “slow and tasty” — plus allergies and preferences.
Why: food is energy and mood for your group.
Over lunch we can also share a few notes on Algarvian cuisine and what’s genuinely worth trying.
7) What style suits you best: more walking, more ocean time, more photography?
Some people want coastal trails and panoramas; others prefer sitting with a view; others want photo-friendly spots without hurry.
Why: it helps us keep the day true to you, not a standard programme.
6 example day formats (to make it easier to picture).
1) Praia de Benagil + Praia da Marinha + coastal walk (Seven Hanging Valleys)
Best for: travellers who enjoy walking and scenic coastal views.
How we plan it: we choose a comfortable section of the trail (based on your level), add great viewpoints, pauses, and an easy rhythm.
2) Coast and cliffs without rush: Praia da Marinha → Algar Seco → Cabo de São Vicente
Best for: families and groups who want a smooth, beautiful day with minimal “hopping around”.
How we plan it: we set the sequence so there’s time for photos, pauses, and simply being by the ocean.
3) Lagos: views, old town atmosphere, and the story of the Age of Discoveries
Best for: travellers who like combining coastline with a lively historic town feel.
How we plan it: if you’re travelling with older guests, we include more comfortable pauses and fewer sections with noticeable elevation changes; if you want “easy and tasty”, we plan lunch and a walk through the nicest areas.
4) Sagres + Cabo de São Vicente: “end of the land” Atlantic feeling
Best for: big ocean landscapes and a special sunset.
How we plan it: we build in enough time so nothing feels rushed, and choose the right points for your group’s comfort.
5) Faro: a calm introduction to the region’s capital
Best for: travellers who enjoy historic centres, local atmosphere, and relaxed strolling.
How we plan it: we combine characterful streets, the right pauses, and recommendations for a pleasant stop.
6) Ria Formosa: nature, lagoons, birds, quiet
Best for: a nature-led day at an easy pace.
How we plan it: we agree what matters most (walk, nature watching, photography), and if it fits, a boat trip on the Ria Formosa out to the islands (weather permitting).
Mini stories (what this looks like in real life).
A German couple: a beautiful walk without turning holiday into logistics
They’d long wanted to walk the Algarve coastline, but didn’t want their break to become a parking/navigation exercise.
We met them at their accommodation in Albufeira (Hotel Sol e Mar), handled the timing and logistics, advised on footwear and water — and kept the walk calm, scenic, and easy.
A Ukrainian couple living in Germany: “show us the most beautiful day — we don’t want to think about anything”
They had one day in the Algarve and wanted it beautiful and peaceful.
We planned around their pace and request: Praia da Marinha views, a relaxed stop near Benagil, Algar Seco, and sunset at Cabo de São Vicente — with wraps/blankets for the evening and enough time margin on the road.

FAQ
Is it a problem if we have children or older guests in the group?
No. It simply helps us plan the right pace, walks, and stops.
Can we do a half-day?
Yes. A gentle format up to 4 hours works very well when you want a beautiful experience without a long day.
Can we add a boat trip?
Yes, if you’d like. We’ll suggest the best format for your group and route, weather permitting.
Can we include a tasting?
Yes, if that interests you — we’ll add it in a way that fits your pace and still leaves time for the main highlights.
